Bobbinet fabrics: Flexible, low weight but strong

Swisstulle UK Plc is the world’s largest volume manufacture of bobbinet fabrics. These fabrics benefit from high strength, high flexibility and low weight amongst others and as such are popular for a variety of technical applications. The benefits of the bobbinet fabrics have been further developed by using conductive yarns. These yarns when used in the unique structure give the fabric a very low resistance and form an evenly distributed matrix of contact points.

The resulting conductive fabrics are used as layers in textile switches (as illustrated below), where they are separated by a non-conductive layer. The application of force to the fabric, compresses the layers, creating a connection and a complete circuit. The simple ”on/off” recognition can be extended by the use of processing chips, allowing the fabrics to monitor pressure, movement, position and more, creating a wealth of applications. Including: Wearable entertainment devices such as controllers for music players and mobile communications to military and medical applications. The bobbinet’s combination of light weight, flexibility and stability allow the textile switches to be integrated in to products with the minimum of bulk and interference.
