Sioen Nordifa: Nonwovens for filtration & technical felts

In 2001, it was taken over by the very active and powerful Belgium group Sioen, quoted on the Brussels Stock Exchange but with a majority owned by the Sioen family. This is an important aspect as the management is more looking for strong and profitable long-term growth than for immediate profits. To be part of the group is very important states Bernard Colson, the Technical Director, “It has given us the financing needed for heavy investments and a strong network within the group to design and make-up new products from the raw material up to the finished goods. Thanks to the power of SIOEN Industries, we can get benefit of a great group synergy. For example, we offer a nonwoven composite made with a supporting scrim from TIS and a coating from the coating division in Ardooie.” Today Sioen Nordifa is a fast growing company. In 2006, its turnover was around 10 million Euros ($13 million). Its staff accounts for 65 employees including technical, production and sales. The products are developed around two main activities: industrial filtration and technical felts. Industrial filtration products are still the main range. The end markets include the cement industry, the steel industry, and incinerators. Sioen Nordifa supplies filter media in 65 countries worldwide. The competitive advantages of the company are the vertical integration and the know-how on nearly all existing fibres as PP, PET, PA, PAN, m-Aramid, PPS, P84, Stainless steel, carbon, biodegradable polymers, ... in different counts from 0.9 to 17 deniers for a weight range from 60 to 2000 g/m². Technical felts are way newer as the division is only three years old. Bernard Colson defines the strategy: “You need it, we make it! Challenge us! Our goal is to find a solution to a customer’s problem.” He adds “The know-how already developed in filtration is essential, as we have studied all the fibres, know about so many finishing processes within our company: singeing, calendering, impregnating, paste or foam coating. Together with our vertical integration, these give us a high level of specificity and a huge added value. Moreover, thanks to our online cutting facilities, we are also able to provide our customers with ready to use cut-to-size panels.” The markets are mainly: pipe rehabilitation felts, noise insulation, the mattress industry, printing supports and many more Bernard Colson did not want to elaborate on because of non disclosure agreements. The geographical markets: Benelux, France, Germany, Italy, the UK and…. Hong Kong!
