Textile research in India, in organised form, is more than eighty years old. In spite of this mature status, there has been hardly any serious attempt to project specifically the noteworthy amongst these research contributions by Indian scientists and technologists for the consumption of the global textile fraternity.
T A Subramanian's (more popularly known as TAS) painstaking and highly praiseworthy research work on developing
"A General Equation for Estimating Yarn Tenacity" belongs to this category. This is a befitting contribution for publication by textile Association (India) to initiate global awareness of India's excellence in the field of textile research, via the Internet as well as through the print medium. This effort of the Association to exploit the Internet to spread the results of indigenous R&D worldwide has received good financial support from the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research-DSIR of the Government od India. This has helped TAI to strengthen its organisational and techno-managerial websites substantially.
An accurate prediction of the tenacity of ring spun yarns from cotton fibre properties has been a subject of great interest to textile researchers over the last few decades. The outcome was not conclusive: neither were the formulae accurate enough in Prediction, nor were they applicable universally, ie, valid over all yarn counts at different twists and adaptable to mill conditions. TAS deserves high compliment for able tying up all such loose ends from the earlier approaches (including his own and coming out eventually with freshly tested equation that takes care of eliminating the previous anomalies and lacunae. The methodology of estimation is applicable also to rotor spun yarns and for yarns from manmade fibres.
The Present Monograph deals with this subject involving several complex relationships very Lucidly, both for the fellow researchers and for the technologists/managers of Progressive spinning mills. The Monograph will prove very useful to cotton selectors/purchasers, industry owners, Practicing technologists, researchers as well as to teachers and students.
