  4.28% rise in per capita textile consumption in 2007

The per capita consumption of textiles for the year 2007 is 22.41 metres as against 21.49 metres in 2006 recording a growth of 4.28%.

On an average, a person purchased and used 0.92 metres more of textiles and clothing in the year 2007 than the previous year. On an average, an Indian spent Rs 1,488.39 on the purchase of textiles & clothing in the calendar year 2007, which is more by Rs 97.30 over the previous year (a growth of 6.99 per cent). There has been an overall expansion in the domestic household market (in qty terms) to the extent of 6.09%, which is due to a combined effect of per capita purchases and population growth. The market size for textiles and clothing in India has stood at 25,493 million metres in the year as compared to the previous year's estimate of 24,030 million metres (a growth of 6.09%). In value terms, the size of the Indian textile market was Rs 16,92,952 million in 2007. The same for the year 2006 was Rs 15,55,835 million (a growth of 8.81%).

About 3.22% of the Indian households have not purchased any textile items during this year while 14.64% of the households purchased textiles and clothing up to Rs 1000. It is estimated that 1 7.55 per cent of the households incurred an expenditure in the range of Rs 1,001 - Rs 2,000 towards the purchase of textiles and 14.46 per cent spent an amount ranging from Rs 2001- Rs 3000 on textiles. About 19.85 per cent spent in the range of Rs 3,001 - Rs 5,000, 19.84% spent in the range of Rs 5,001 - Rs 10,000, 7.94% spent in the range of Rs 10,001 - Rs 20,000. The households incurring an expenditure of Rs 20,001 and tnore is about 2.5%. The highlights also include the gradual and most perceptible change in the fibre man-made and blended/ mixed textiles taken together continue to grow, which has recorded a share of 60.08% in the total consumption in quantity. While pure cotton textiles and clothing has a share of 38.95% in the consumption, Pure Silk and Woollen products have a meagre share of 0.62% and 0.35% respectively.

Market for Shirt

The total market size of readymade shirts has stood at 419 million pieces in 2007 as compared to 399 million pieces in 2006. The demand for shirt has thus gone up by 5.01% in 2007 over the demand in 2006.

The man-made and blended/mixed shirts are more popular with a demand share of 71.12% as against 28.88% of pure cotton shirts. The demand for cotton shirts during this period are estimated at 121 million pieces and man-made and blended/mixed shirts are estimated at 298 million pieces.

Market for Shirting (cloth in running metres)

The total market size of shirting has stood at 1,817 million metres in 2007 as compared to 1,648 million metres in 2006, thus pushing up the aggregate demand by 10.25%. Out of the above, the urban areas have a share of 26.53% and rural areas a share of 73.47%.

The man-made and blended/mixed shirting is more popular with a demand share of 90.75% as against 9.25% of pure cotton shirting. The demand for cotton shirting material during the period is estimated at 168 million metres and for man-made and blended/mixed shirting it is estimated at 1649 million metres.

Market for Trousers

The total market size of readymade trousers is 314 million pieces in 2007 as compared to 292 million pieces in 2006. The demand for trousers has thus gone upby 7.53%. Out of the above, the urban areas have a share of 44.27 per cent and rural areas a share of 55.73%. The trousers market shows a consistent and gradual increase in size.

The man-made and blended/mixed trousers more popular with a demand share of 73.25% of the market as against 26.75% of cotton trousers. The demand for cotton trousers during this period is estimated at 84 million pieces and for man-made and blended/mixed trousers it is estimated at 230 million pieces.

Market for Jeans (Male)

The total market size of readymade Jeans (Male) has been estimated at 173 million pieces in 2007 as compared to 163 million pieces in 2006. Out of the above, the urban areas have a share of 43.35% and rural areas a share of 56.65%.

Market for Jeans (Female)

The total market size of Jeans (F) has stood at 9 million pieces in 2007 as compared to 8 million pieces in 2006. The urban consumers mainly dominate in the usage pattern and this is close to 100%.

Market for Coating and Suiting

The total market size of coating/suiting has stood at 564 million metres in 2007 as compared to 558 million metres in 2006. The demand for coating/suiting has thus gone up by 1.08%. Out of the above, the urban areas have a share of 44.15% and rural areas a share of 55.85%.

Market for Salwar Kameez

The total market size of salwar-kameez has stood at 339 million pieces in 2007 as compared to 319 million pieces in 2006. The demand for salwar-kameez has thus gone up by 6.27% in 2007 over the demand in 2006. Out of the above, the urban areas have a share of 42.77% and rural areas a share of 57.23%.

The man-made and blended/mixed salwar kameez is the popular category with a demand share of 74.63% of the market as against 25.37% of cotton salwar kameez. The demand for cotton salwar kameez during the period is estimated at 86 million pieces and for man-made and blended/mixed salwar kameez it is estimated at 253 million pieces.

Market for Dhoti (Male)

The total market size of dhoti (M) has stood at 117 million pieces in 2007 as compared to 128 million pieces in 2006. The demand for dhoti has thus declined by 8.59% in 2007 over the demand in 2006. Out of the above, the urban areas have a share of 21.37% and rural areas a share of 78.63%. The dhoti market is showing a gradually decreasing size due to the shifts in the dressing pattern of the people, especially in southern and eastern regions of the country.

The cotton dhoti is the preferred one with a demand share of 72.65% over 27.35% of man-made and blended/mixed dhoti. The demand for cotton dhoti during the period is estimated at 85 million pieces and for man-made and blended/mixed dhoti it is estimated at 32 million pieces.

Market for Saree

The total market size of sarees is estimated at 1,720 million pieces in 2007 as compared to 1,612 million pieces in 2006. The demand for sarees has thus gone up by 6.70%. Out of the above, the urban areas have a share of 38.49% and rural areas a share of 61.51%. The saree market is showing a gradually increasing size though there are shifts in the dressing pattern of the women, especially in southern and eastern regions.

The man-made and blended/ mixed saree has higher demand with a share of 75.47% of the market as against 22.90% of cotton sarees and the rest 1.63% of the share is with the pure silk sarees. The demand for cotton saree during the period is estimated at 394 million pieces and for man-made and blended/mixed saree it is estimated at 1,298 million pieces. The demand for pure silk saree during the period is estimated at 28 million pieces.

Market for T-shirt (Male)

The total market size of readymade T-shirt (M) has stood at 179 million pieces in 2007 as compared to 165 million pieces in 2006 showing an increased demand for T-shirt (M) by 8.48%.

Market for T-shirt (Female)

The total market size of readymade T-shirt (F) has stood at 13 million pieces in 2007 as compared to 11 million pieces in 2006 showing a growth of 18.18%.

Market for Chaddar/Bedsheet

The total market size of Chaddar has increased to 127 million pieces in 2007 from 122 million pieces in 2006 indicating an increase in the usage of Chaddar by 4.10%. Out of the above, the urban areas have a share of 22.05% and rural areas a share of 77.95%.

The total market size of bed sheet has stood at 156 million pieces in 2007 as compared to 148 million pieces in 2006. The demand for Bed sheet has thus gone up by 5.41% in 2007 over the demand in 2006. Out of the above, the urban areas have a share of 43.59% and rural areas a share of 56.41%.

The cotton chaddar is popular with a demand share of 96.06% of the market as against 3.94% of man-made and blended/mixed chaddar. The demand for cotton chaddar during the period is estimated at 122 million pieces and for man-made and blended/mixed chaddar it is estimated at 5 million pieces.

The cotton bedsheet is the popular with a demand share of 93.59% of the market as against 6.41% of man-made and blended/mixed bedsheet. The demand for cotton bedsheet during the period is estimated at 146 million pieces and for man-made and blended/mixed bedsheet it is estimated at 10 million pieces.

Market for Towel/Terry Towel:

The market size of towel has stood at 400 million pieces in 2007 as compared to 387 million pieces in 2006. The demand for towel has thus gone up by 3.36%. Out of the above, the urban area has a share of 32.50% and rural areas a share of 67.50%.

The total market size of terry towel has stood at 15 million pieces in 2007 as compared to 13 million pieces in 2006. The demand for terry towel has thus gone up by 15.38%. Out of the above, the urban areas have a share of 60% and rural areas a share of 40%.
