Colours matter, but curbing pollution matters most

When you think of colours in textiles, the SDC (Society of Dyers & Colourists) logo ineluctably springs to the mind of anyone even remotely associated with textile industry! “SDC is one of the oldest institutions, founded way back in 1884. In our country, SDC has been playing a sterling role in propagating the values of colour, and is actively doing its best to educate the industry in giving colours without the painful load of toxic effluents to the detriment of eco-systems,” says Yogesh Gaikwad, Head of SDC India Operations.

Talking of colouration industry in India, Gaikwad said that in India the industry is moving ahead. “Look at Tirrupur, Ahmedabad and such places, many things have changed. Effluent treatment is happening, but still there is a long way to go. In sustainability, countries like China and even Sri Lanka have moved up higher than us. In many places in India, we have made a beginning, but the implementation of effluent standards, etc has not gone the way we expect it to,” he added.

During an informal chat with the Editor of ITJ, Gaikwad opened up his mind to all the problems that have seized the industry in its journey of putting profits before humanity. “Automation is on the rise, and at the same time, instead of its promise of bringing in more jobs, only unemployment is increasing. Everybody is talking about sustainability. But when news like 5 big companies in the UK not making any efforts towards sustainability goals, it is very upsetting,” said Gaikwad.

Said Gaikwad: “High technology is always good for the industry. But India has a legacy of adopting low technologies mostly because we have plenty of small-scale units, which cannot spend more money. They compromised on the important issue of technologies and now it will take time to catch up with the other countries. The funds and assistance have gone to the higher-end sector in the industry, but have not reached the lower end segments. So, the development is one-sided. Help has not reached units in Bhiwandi, Ulhasnagar, etc.”

The mission of SDC changing the world in the science of colour by creating VLE, which is Virtual Learning Environment for the colouration industry. This means that anyone in the world, wherever they are, they can learn about colour. You need not go to UK to get qualification. The SDC remains the only organisation in the world able to award the Chartered Colourist status. The SDC works globally, with worldwide membership and is a centre for networking and community engagement amongst the colouration industry.

The SDC is the commendable provider of colour education, offering a range of internationally recognised colouration courses and qualifications, with the sole mission to educate the changing world in the science of colour. Founded in 1884, the SDC became a registered charity in 1962 and was awarded a Royal Charter in 1963.
